Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to have a large property to install geothermal?
A: No. Geothermal systems can be installed in almost any size property - even a driveway. With Liberty Heat & Energy's highly-specialized and technologically-advanced well solutions, we can install in almost any size property and save you money.
Q: Do I need to install air vents and ductwork?
A: Existing baseboard heating, radiant floors, and some other hydronic, or water-based, heating systems can be used to heat your home or office. To take advantage of the cooling function of the system, an air duct system would need to be present or installed.
Q: What kind of fuel does a geothermal system use?
A: None! A geothermal system doesn't burn any fuel. It uses the natural temperature of the earth beneath our feet to heat and cool your home or office. There is no flame present, no fuel, no odors, and virtually no operating noise.
Q: Can one system provide both space heating & cooling for my home? And what about heating hot water?
A: A geothermal system can be a combination heating/cooling and hot water heating system. You can change from one mode to another with a simple flick on your indoor thermostat. Using a desuperheater, some geothermal pumps can save you up to 50% on your water-heating bill by preheating tank water.
Q: How much space does a geothermal system require?
A: The majority of a geothermal system's materials are installed underground (ground loops, insulating grout). Inside the house, the heat exchange units are about the same size as other heating and cooling systems, and in some cases use considerably less space.
Q: How long with a geothermal system last?
A: Geothermal systems are extremely durable and highly reliable. The geothermal system contains fewer mechanical components, and all components are either buried in the ground or located inside the home, which protects them from outside conditions. The underground pipe carries up to a 50-year warranty. Warranties on heat exchanger units vary by make and model.
Q: How safe are geothermal systems?
A: Geothermal systems have no exposed parts outdoors, so children and pets can not injure themselves or damage any exterior equipment. Also, there is no flame, flammable fuel, or potentially dangerous storage tank present with a ground source heat pump. With no flame or fuel being burned, there is no danger of smoke or other harmful gases and fumes being present in your home.
Q: How are geothermal systems good for the environment?
A: Geothermal systems provide the most efficient climate control for your home or business. By using a geothermal system, you reduce the natural resources being consumed, which lowers emissions. Geothermal systems also minimize ozone layer destruction by using factory-sealed refrigeration systems, which will seldom or never have to be recharged.
Q: What are the environmental benefits to a geothermal system?
A: Installed systems are making a huge difference in our environment! Geothermal systems are eliminating more than 5.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and is equivalent of taking 1,295,000 automobiles off the road. Ground source heat pumps conserve energy and, because they move heat that already exists rather than burning something to create heat, they reduce the amount of toxic emissions in the atmosphere. They use renewable energy from the sun, and because the system doesn't rely on outside air, it keeps the air inside of buildings cleaner and free from pollens, outdoor pollutants, mold spores, and other allergens.
